Chris Davis with raccoon

Chris Davis is the author and illustrator of five uplifting and inspirational books for dog and cat lovers. Her award-winning titles, with their whimsical artwork and gentle words, have brought comfort to readers around the world who’ve lost a beloved animal companion.

In the summer of 2012, Chris found herself pulled into a BBC television show called Merlin. It was a moment that changed everything about her life. She designed a magical sword and had it made by a local blacksmith. She named the sword Clarity. This led to the writing of her sixth title, Breathing Fire, a book about letting go of the familiar and inviting your inner pirate to come out and dance.

Chris is working on a new book about two old friends, one feathered and one furred, who travel from the past to meet her, in desperate need of her help.

“I knew they’d appear, Chris said, now that my sword had returned.”

Lessons from the Armadillo

As a born-and-raised New York City girl I never could have known that I’d be writing about armadillos.

Yet, here I am—a Greenwich Village hippie who left New York many years ago, landed in Portland, Oregon and wound up in commercial construction working on huge projects. I spent fifteen years with extraordinary men who brought me my first piece of armor—a hard hat.

My path took a wondrous turn and I became a writer of heart-felt books for dog and cat lovers. I’ll always be grateful for the many friends, both two-legged and four-legged, that I met along the way. We shared stories about our critters and shed unending tears when the time came to say goodbye.

In 2012, a scene in the British TV show MERLIN left me screaming on my bedroom floor. When I came to my feet, I stood up a sword fighter and began a journey that would reimagine my brain and clarify my purpose. This led to the writing of my sixth book, Breathing Fire.
